A vision isn’t just a statement!
❌ A mistake I often see organisations make when challenged to come up with a “vision for the future” is to simply come up with a line or two that is little more than a statement of intent!
While that may provide some focus and motivation, it’s not really enough to ensure that you get there.
🗻 As an example, let’s imagine you wanted to climb Everest.
There’s a lot more to it than imagining yourself at the summit!
You’d hardly get yourself to base camp and then start to imagine what the climb would be like, figure out what equipment you need, what training to do and so on.
No, you’d do all that at the start to ensure that you were ready and maximise your chances of success.
In the same way, it’s important to dig deeper into your vision, to really imagine what the organisation will be like when it is achieved.
Here’s a series of questions I use with clients to help them get that some of that clarity:
🤔 What is the organisation like compared to now?
🤔 What do you see, and hear, and feel that is different?
🤔 How are people acting differently?
🤔 What are relationships like between team members?
🤔 How do they feel about their work?
🤔 What is different about the interactions between leaders and others in the organisation?
🤔 How are plans made and perceived?
🤔 How are working practices different?
🤔 What sort of results are we achieving?”
🤔 How much effort is needed to achieve these results?
🤔 What are our customers saying about us?”
🤔 What are our competitors saying about us?”
The aim is to create a “rich picture” in the minds of everyone in the organisation in a way that will:
✅ l engage and inspire them to work towards its achievement.
✅ allow you to plan properly right from the start and ensure you’re doing all the right things as you work towards it.
So, how clear is your vision? What do you need to add?
